About the film

The song came first: a country tune about a man rushing out of the door and a child who stops him. The pictures follow the words beat by beat. Coffee going cold. A jump off the stair. Keys put down on the table. A pencil mark on a doorframe. A pond. A phone set face down. The carry to bed.

The people in the film are invented. No real person appears in it, and the rooms, the garden and the car are imagined too. The film was made with image and video models and cut to the original recording of the song. It is a rough cut, so some chorus shots repeat and the clothes change between scenes.

The words

Coffee getting cold, she’s got something to say, Takes the long way round it, I was rushing through my day. “Daddy, watch this”—just a jump off the stair, But she checks before she lands to see if I’m still there.

Shoes on the wrong feet, dancing by the door, I say, “We’re running late,” she says, “One song more.” Got a head full of tomorrow, got my keys in my hand, She’s teaching me to stop before I understand.

One more time, let the whole song play, Little bare feet stealing my day. Round and around on the living-room floor, I came to get my keys—now we’re dancing some more. Days go fast, but the light’s still here, Your laugh’s coming through me, loud and clear. I can’t slow the years, but I’ve got tonight— One more song, baby, one more time.

There’s a pencil on the doorframe marking how you grow, You stand a little taller than you did a week ago. I remember when your fingers couldn’t circle round my thumb, Now you pull me toward the water, saying, “Daddy, come!”

Some days I get impatient, some days I get it wrong, Answer half your question with my eyes still on my phone. Then you climb up on the sofa, put your cheek against my sleeve, And I set the whole thing down. There’s nowhere else to be.

One day I’ll put you down And you’ll run off on your own. I won’t know that was the last time Till you’ve already grown. Tonight you’re getting heavy, Your head beneath my chin. I’ll carry you to bed now— Let tomorrow wander in.

One more time, let the whole song play, Little bare feet stealing my day. Round and around till we both fall down, Laughing so hard that we can’t make a sound. Days go fast, but the light’s still here, Your laugh’s coming through me, loud and clear. I can’t slow the years, but I’ve got tonight— One more song, baby, one more time.

“Again, Daddy.” All right. One more time.
